2011's Photograph Of The Year, according to National Geographic.
Every year, National Geographic sorts through tens of thousands of incredible images taken in the previous 365 days and comes up with a winner for their annual photography contest. This is a big deal for a photographer, as professionals and amateurs enter their best work in one of three categories (people, places, and nature) in an attempt to win the acclaim and $10,000 prize that comes with taking the best picture of 2011. Unfortunately, there can be only one grand prize winner, and this year’s best photograph is “Splashing,” Shikhei Goh’s photograph of a dragonfly taken in Indonesia.
“Splashing” was the grand prize winner and the winner of the nature category; now Goh will get a cash prize, a free trip to National Geographic headquarters in Washington, D.C., and the chance to participate in the National Geographic Photography Seminar, which takes place yearly. The full gallery of winners and short-listed entries can be found at National Geographic’s gallery.
