By all accounts, last night’s Golden Globes as presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association failed to strike the same controversial tone that was taken during host Ricky Gervais’s previous stints as the presenter of the ceremony. For his third hosting gig, it seems like he was mostly marginalized to a few brief introduction periods, which means that his chance to offend celebrities was kept to a minimum and which made the show itself less funny than previous editions. Still, I ended up watching the whole thing, so it couldn’t have been that bad (and it wasn’t; the stars made some funny digs back at Gervais when they had the chance). The 69th Golden Globe Awards is over and done; were there any surprises?
There were some surprising big winners last night. The fact that Meryl Streep won isn’t stunning (after all, she had two nominations in 2010), but the fact that this was her record-setting 8th Golden Globe kind of is. A big winner on the male side was George Clooney, who took home awards for best actor in a motion picture drama and whose film The Descendants took home best picture on the dramatic side. The other big winner was The Artist, which swept up awards for best picture comedy, best actor for Jean Dujardin, and best original score. Morgan Freeman took home the Cecil B. DeMille Award, which is the HFPA’s lifetime achievement award.
