Al, Bill, and Newt at the 1997 State of the Union Address.
So, it’s kind of gross to think about, but the news is out there and we’re going to go ahead and discuss it. Newt Gingrich, GOP presidential candidate, has faced a lot of scrutiny during his campaign through the primaries. Now, he’s being assaulted on a new front: his personal life. Marianne Gingrich, second ex-wife of Newt Gingrich, says her husband wanted an open marriage. When he didn’t get one, he left her and moved on to marry his then-mistress. As it turns out, Newt’s got a little Charlie Sheen in him.
Here’s the question: do we really care whether or not Newt wanted an open marriage? Does it harm his potential ability to be president? I mean, I have a lot of problems with Newt, and none of them have anything to do with his ability to keep his hands to himself. After all, everyone seems to love President Clinton, and he didn’t even have the guts to tell Hillary that he wanted an open marriage, he just blatantly cheated on her with interns. Shouldn’t we at least all declare that what happened between Newt and Marianne has nothing to do with his ability to be president?
Really, the fact that the ex-Mrs. Gingrich came forward with details about her husband’s sex life in and of itself is kind of disgraceful and gross. Marianne Gingrich should be a little classier than that, shouldn’t she? I’m sure she’s probably mad about how the marriage ended and all that stuff, but is there no sanctity in marriage anymore? Even a broken-up one? I really, really, really never need to think about Newt Gingrich getting his freak on ever again, and I hate that I’ve been forced to think about it even now.
