Sacha Baron Cohen is one of the principal performers in Hugo, Martin Scorsese’s beautiful homage to the early days of cinema and a nominee for the Academy Award for Best Picture at this year’s Oscars. However, Sacha Baron Cohen may also be persona non-grata at The Oscars if he comes in a persona and not as himself. The Oscars have threatened Sacha Baron Cohen and have promised to pull his tickets if he uses the Academy Awards’ red carpet as a promotional place for his upcoming movie.
“We haven’t banned him, we’re just waiting to hear what he’s going to do,” said an Academy spokesperson, who added that they did not want Cohen hijacking their red carpet. “We don’t think it’s appropriate, but his tickets haven’t been pulled. We’re waiting to hear back.”
Cohen has a history of pulling stunts to promote his movies. In 2009, he came as Bruno to the MTV Movie Awards; in 2006, Cohen appeared at the Toronto International Film Festival as Borat, riding in a wagon being pulled by “Kazakhstani peasant women.” The Academy is very careful not to allow studio-specific film promotion during its telecast, so their threats to Cohen and Paramount (the company behind The Dictator) are very serious.
Wearing Crocs is okay, but coming as Freddie Mercury is not.
