How Kathy Lee Gifford ended up as the host of her own hour of The Today Show is kind of a mystery, but I have to admit that checking in on Kathy Lee and co-host Hoda Kotb is kind of like checking in with a daily train wreck starring America’s favorite drunk aunt. It’s not a good hour of television by any means, but sometimes it can be unintentionally entertaining. Sometimes, it can also be awful. For example, yesterday’s visit with actor and comedian Martin Short. Ordinarily a good talk show guest, Martin was on the show to promote Madagascar 3; instead, he was given the third degree about marriage by Kathy Lee in a facepalm-worthy interview. Kathy Lee Gifford grilled Martin Short about his marriage to wife Nancy, which ended in 2010 after she died of ovarian cancer.
Man, you have to give a lot of credit to Martin Short here for not having a breakdown. Granted, his wife’s been gone for two years now, but I imagine most people in his situation might have derailed Kathy’s drunken train of thought by blurting out, “Well, she was great but she’s been dead two years, Kathy Lee.” I probably wouldn’t have been as nice, but it’s a credit to Short as a person and a professional that he was able to keep himself in check and roll with KLG’s discussion train. It’s the kind of mistake that would embarrass Gene Shalit himself, and Gene Shalit isn’t even embarrassed by his bad puns, haircut, and mustache.
This never would have happened on Regis’s watch; then again, Kathy Lee wouldn’t be drinking in public on television if she hadn’t left her show with Philbin. Kathy apologized later that day via Twitter.
