Good news, fellow fat people! After 13 long years with no new diet drugs having passed FDA approval, the drought is over and there’s a new weapon in the war against obesity. Along with your glasses of water a day, prepare to swallow down a new drug called Belviq (generic lorcaserin) to aid your weight loss journey. Belviq, from Arena Pharmaceuticals and Eisai Inc., works directly on brain chemistry to improve functioning of the brain. Basically, the drug helps fool your brain into thinking you’re full quicker, so it helps keep you from eating too much.
There are some conditions that come with the prescription of Belviq, at least according to how the FDA tested the drug. The drug is designed for people with a BMI over 30 and with some other medical or health condition. There are some serious concerns with how the drug affects heart valves, but the FDA has decided that approving a new weight loss drug is greater than the risk of heart problems. Given just how much weight most people need to lose, anything that helps drop pounds is probably a good thing for health.
Of course, the drug is not perfect. You’ll lose 5 to 10 percent of your body weight, but that’s in combination with a diet and exercise program. If you just take the pill, it won’t help you as much as you need. You have to do your part, too.
