Tesla Motors is an ambitious company, but I’m sure even they couldn’t predict their success. Tesla’s Model X SUV is very popular, the Tesla Roadster sold out, and the company is sparking an electric car revolution in California. However, it’s Tesla’s success in the rest of the world that’s catching eyes. In a decision called historic, Motor Trend has given Tesla’s Model S sedan the coveted “Car of the Year” award. It was a historic decision because every editor at Motor Trend agreed that the Model S is the best car of the year.
“It drives like a sports car, eager and agile and instantly responsive. But it’s also as smoothly effortless as a Rolls-Royce, can carry almost as much stuff as a Chevy Equinox, and is more efficient than a Toyota Prius,” Motor Trend writes. “By any measure, the Tesla Model S is a truly remarkable automobile, perhaps the most accomplished all-new luxury car since the original Lexus LS 400.”
The $57,000 sedan achieved the equivalent of 118 miles a gallon on a 212-mile trip taken by Motor Trend’s staff. The car was able to go from 0 to 60 in 4 seconds despite weighing 4766 pounds, reaching a top speed of 133 miles an hour. That’s the equivalent of a 416-horsepower gas engine! Between this and the success of Space X, this is a banner year for Elon Musk!
