When it comes to matters of weight, people are very sensitive. In particular, when it comes to clothing, you have to be careful about what you have and what you name specific clothing items. Target has found this out the hard way as the retailer has landed in hot water over its color names. Target has two versions of its Mossimo Women’s Kimono Maxi Dress. The standard version is dark heather gray; the plus sized version is called manatee gray. Target has been selling a “manatee gray” plus-sized dress.
The difference in dress color name, says Targets, is that the two groups of clothing buyers didn’t communicate with one another to standardize dress color names across size barriers. Target has a lot of other products in manatee gray, from towels to pillows, but there’s a big difference between manatee gray towels and a manatee gray plus-size dress. After all, no one is going to be fat-shamed by towels, unless maybe they’re not big enough to cover properly or won’t dry someone off totally.
