When 51-year-old grandmother Maria Carreiro thought she had a winning lottery ticket, the retired factory worker checked and saw that she won $40,000. Thrilled, she went to her daughter for verification. As it turns out, Maria Carreiro misread her lottery ticket and her $40,000 win was actually $40 million dollars. Thrilled at her $40,000 win, Ms. Carreiro went appropriately crazy when she realized that her prize would provide for her and her children for life.
“I couldn’t believe it. I was shaking and just couldn’t believe that it was real. We were all excited when we thought it was only in the thousands but then in disbelief when we discovered I was a millionaire!” said a thrilled Carreiro at a press conference at the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Commission. Carreiro cried, “Thank you, Lord! Thank you, Lord!” as she received her over-sized check while dancing and blowing kisses.
Carreiro won her big prize via Canada’s Lottery Max drawing thanks to deviating from her routine. She usually used her children’s birthdays as her lucky numbers; this time, she let the computer pick and ended up bringing home the big prize. Even better, Canadians don’t pay taxes on lottery winnings. She plans on buying a house, new clothes, and taking a honeymoon with her husband of 30 years, Mario. Hopefully she continues to play the lottery, because sometimes lottery winners keep on winning.
