If you’re tired of traditional politicians doing anything to win, there’s someone out there who is ready and willing to do absolutely nothing yet still make an impact based simply on who he is. That candidate is only 10 months old, but in political years he’s an old hat. Morris the cat is running for mayor in the Mexican town of Xalapa. Xalapa is a town of 450,000 people in the state of Veracruz, which has been ravaged by political corruption and drug violence.
“He sleeps almost all day and does nothing, and that fits the profile of a politician,” said 35-year-old office worker Sergio Chamorro, who adopted Morris last year. “Morris has been a catalyst to show the discontent that exists in our society. Our message from the beginning has been ‘if none of the candidates represent you, vote for the cat’ and it seems people are responding to that.”
Morris’s slogan is: Tired of Voting for Rats? Vote for a Cat. So far, Morris has been a hit on social media, racking up 115,000 likes on Facebook. The proceeds from the sales of Morris’s campaign tee-shirts and bumper stickers is donated to local animal shelters in the Xalapa area. Supporters are urged to draw a cat face or write in Morris’s name on their ballots during Mexico’s July 7 elections. Morris has been getting a great deal of support from other animal mayors online.
