The Bowl Championship Series, or BCS, has been a pretty controversial way to determine a national champion, given its reliance on computers, human bias, and generally not playing a tournament to determine the true winner like NCAA basketball does. That will be changing next season with the dawn of a four-team tournament; however, the last BCS game might be the best BCS championship game ever. The Florida State Seminoles bested the Auburn Tigers 34-31 to claim the final BCS National Championship.
The game had everything, from a record-setting 18-point comeback by Florida State to kickoffs returned for touchdowns, long scoring runs, hard-hitting defense, and everything you would want from a matchup of the 2010 champion Tigers and the 1999 champion Seminoles. It ended up as a shootout in which the last team who scores wins, and that last team ended up being Florida State.
“It’s the best football game he played all year,” Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher said of Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston, “and I’ll tell you why: Because for three quarters he was up and down, and he fought. And just like any great player, some nights you don’t have it. When you can go back like the great ones do — ‘It’s not my night, but we’ve got a chance to win this ballgame. It’s in the fourth quarter, I’ve got one or two touches left’ — and you can take your team down the field and lead to victory, that’s what a great player is to me. Anybody can do it when it’s their A-game night. A lot of guys can do that. Very few can do it when it’s not their night.”
