When you need a guy to turn in a brilliant character performance, and you needed a guy who looks like the exact opposite of every leading man ever, you always had Philip Seymour Hoffman to turn to. Philip Seymour Hoffman is dead at 46. According to police, he was found with a syringe of heroin in his arm when he was found in his West Village apartment. The saddest part is he leaves behind three children; the second saddest part is that he was sober for 23 years before he relapsed and went to rehab earlier this year.
“We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Phil and appreciate the outpouring of love and support we have received from everyone,” read a statement from Hoffman’s family. “This is a tragic and sudden loss and we ask that you respect our privacy during this time of grieving.”
Hoffman had a brilliant career as an actor, with an Oscar win and three other nominations on top of that. The last thing I saw him in was The Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire. His IMDB page says one of the Hunger Games sequels is in post-production and the other is filming, but he was in New York City when he died, so I can only hope he was finished filming. It’s a shame when anyone dies, but to lose one of America’s greatest actors only makes it that much worse.
