It’s harder and harder to sneak on board airplanes these days. Unless you’re the size of a hamster or you’re a kitten that sneaks out of the cargo hold, you’re going to have to buy a ticket to get on a plane. However, to get caught requires security teams to be paying attention. If nobody’s watching, you can do pretty much whatever you want. A teenager hopped a fence at Mineta San Jose International Airport and took off for Hawaii; he’s lucky to have survived his ordeal.
Shortly after 1 AM, a 15-year-old teenager climbed into the wheel well of Hawaiian Airlines Flight 45 without anyone noticing. Five hours later, the flight landed at Kahului Airport in Maui and the disoriented teen climbed down onto the tarmac. Unlike San Jose, he was immediately noticed by security personnel and was apprehended. That’s a five-hour flight at -40 degrees and in conditions with little to no oxygen while crammed into a tiny space.
Experts believe he must have passed out, since he claims not to remember most of the flight, and he must have been tangled pretty well in the wiring to keep from falling out when the wheel wells opened. The teenager doesn’t face any criminal charges; he’s currently being taken in by child protective services in Hawaii until he can be returned to California on the inside of an airplane.
