There have been cases of people becoming Internet memes and those meme stars becoming killers, but very rarely has there been a killing or attempted killing inspired by a meme. However, that has changed thanks to a tall, faceless skinny man in a black suit who has a habit of lurking in the background of Photoshopped photos just before something allegedly terrible happens to all the kids pictured in the photos. Now something terrible has actually happened to a kid, and it’s all Slenderman’s fault. Two preteen girls stabbed a friend 19 times in an attempt to honor Slenderman (or The Slender Man). Slenderman, for those not in the know, is a fictional piece of online folklore who is about as real as a Japanese toilet ghost, but without the history of haunting.
“Isn’t that the worst kind of killer, the cold-blooded killer?” asked Waukesha County district attorney Brad Schimel. “Most of the time in a crime like this, with such violence like this, there’s spur of the moment, there’s the heat of passion . It’s troubling when a person lashes out in anger. It’s more troubling when they lash out in cold blood.”
The two attempted killers face 60 years in jail and have bail set to the tune of $500,000 a piece. As for their intended victim, she remains in the hospital in stable condition, having narrowly avoided being murdered. One of the stab wounds missed her aortic artery by millimeters.
