Campaign finance reform is a big issue facing the United States. Increasingly, it seems like the side with the most money wins the races, or at least both sides have to spend millions of dollars to win anything. That’s why people who support campaign finance reform tend to be a little more animated about it than other issues. In order to raise awareness, and deliver a message to 535 members of Congress, a United States mailman decided to make an air mail delivery right to the heart of corruption, Washington, D.C. Doug Hughes landed a gyrocopter on the West Lawn of the US Capitol.
“As I have informed the authorities, I have no violence inclinations or intent,” wrote gyrocopter pilot Hughes on his website, thedemocracyclub.org. “An ultralight aircraft poses no major physical threat — it may present a political threat to graft. I hope so. There’s no need to worry — I’m just delivering the mail.”
Of course, it goes without saying that most of DC is a no-fly zone, and that Hughes put himself in major danger with his stunt. Had he not landed his plane when he did, and where he did, he was in danger of being shot down by authorities, as he was close to the range of the Capitol’s anti-aircraft guns. Yeesh. That would’ve been a terrible way to go.
