If you’re a professional athlete, getting on the cover of a video game is a big deal. That means you’re not just a star, not just the face of a franchise, you’re the face of your entire sport. Athletes love being on the cover of games, even if the Madden Curse tends to derail football careers. For Patrick Kane, hockey superstar and Chicago Blackhawks phenomenon, the NHL 16 cover was probably a big deal. Unfortunately, it’s a short-term deal. Patrick Kane has been pulled from the NHL 16 cover after an incident at his Hamburg, New York home. Teammate Patrick Toews will remain on the cover.
“In light of the ongoing investigation involving Patrick Kane, he will no longer be a spokesperson for the launch of EA Sports NHL 16,” read a press release. “He will not appear on the EA Sports NHL 16 cover, nor participate in other … promotional activities.”
The authorities have not announced just what they’re investigating, stemming from an early August incident at the home. Kane is currently not charged with anything. However, officials have admitted that they’re waiting for forensics test results before moving forward with… whatever vague thing may or may not be happening. As for EA, NHL 16 will be released on September 15.
