Dubai has been on a really impressive building building streak in the last few years. It seems that every week Dubai is doing something else impressive, like building the world’s largest building. Still, fast growth means there are some problems every so often. It seems that every cool project has some kind of problem to deal with. A 63-story hotel near the world’s tallest building is engulfed in flames. The hotel, The Address Hotel, contains rental units, housing, condos, stores, and even a Wolfgang Puck restaurant. Well, it did. Now it mostly contains fire.
“There are no injuries, thank God … of course, it will not affect the celebration,” said Maj. Gen. Rashed al-Matrushi, general director of the Dubai Civil Defence.
Of course, the official government media reports that there were 14 or so minor injuries, and people who are on the ground in Dubai are saying that the fire isn’t nearly as contained as the government officials are saying. After all, there are four teams there fighting the fire in the 1000-foot building (19th tallest in Dubai’s futuristic cityscape). Maybe they can just smash a few giant aquariums to solve the problem.
