This has been a terrible year for music. So many incredible artists have passed away in such a short span. In a few months we’ve lost hard rock legend Lemmy, androgynous icon David Bowie, and now another celebrity is added to the roles of the late and lamented. Prince, the purple legend, the musical wonder, the man who could play pretty much any instrument, has left earth. Prince Rogers Nelson was found dead at his Paisley Park studio. He was 57 years old.
Prince had been an inconoclast to the very end, no matter how many halftime shows he performed. He’d been performing until just a few short days before his death, and had even hosted a party at Paisley Park. He’d been fighting with the flu for several weeks, including making an emergency landing on his way back from a concert to check into the hospital. However, he was released and seemed to be in better health. I guess that wasn’t the case.
I’ve heard some nasty rumors about just why he died, but that doesn’t really matters. What matters is the music, which has been phenomenal for decades. If you can’t enjoy Purple Rain, then there’s no help for you, because that movie is great and Prince is great in it.
