In January, after another mass shooting incident, President Obama addressed the nation and stated, “If we can set it up so you can’t unlock your phone unless you’ve got the right fingerprint, why can’t we do the same thing for our guns?” As it turns out, that wasn’t just a pipe dream, but a glimpse into the Obama administration’s plan on revolutionizing gun technology. Today, President Obama called on the nation’s weapons manufacturers to make smart guns.
It’s not just hyperbole, it’s an attempt to make sure guns can only be used by their actual owners. How do they do that? The same way people make sure their phones stay secure: fingerprint identification. That’s right, the sci-fi technology of Judge Dredd just might be hitting the shelves. Some 4 of 10 gun owners aren’t opposed to the idea, and thus far, the NRA has remained mum on the issue. However, in Judge Dredd, the Judges had guns that blew up if someone attempted to fire them that wasn’t the right Judge. I’m sure that won’t be part of the federal government’s plan.
Said White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest, “The idea is, are there a set of standards and guidelines that can be developed that would ensure that smart gun technology could effectively be used by law enforcement officers? The idea is that, yes, the federal government is a bulk purchaser of firearms.”
