I was never a Bill Nye fan. For whatever reason, I just never took to the show. My science TV show was, and always shall be, Beakman’s World, if only because a guy in a rat suit got to eat sugar glass. Plus they taught me, a movie nerd, how to make sugar glass. Still, I get why people like Bill Nye. The same reason they like Mister Wizard or why I liked Beakman. You got to learn stuff and it was entertaining. Since leaving TV, Nye has been fairly busy as the president of the Planetary Society when not debating people on TV, but now he’s making a career addition. Bill Nye is going to have a new TV show courtesy of Netflix.
The show won’t be straight science, but a kind of talk show format where he’ll talk about science and the issues of the current world. He’ll also work to debunk some of the anti-science talking points that people will no doubt bring up around him, just to add some interest to the show. It’s both an interest in current events and an exercise in nostalgia for a company that’s made good money with nostalgia. Maybe it’ll be a good companion piece to Netflix’s current talk show-type offering from Chelsea Handler?
“Since the start of the Science Guy show, I’ve been on a mission to change the world by getting people everywhere excited about the fundamental ideas in science,” said a statement from Bill Nye. “…With the right science and good writing, we’ll do our best to enlighten and entertain our audience. And, perhaps we’ll change the world a little.”
