It seems, on the surface, like an open-and-shut DUI case. A drunk Thomas Drummond was found in his wrecked automobile on the side of the road in Jackson, Missouri. However, there are extenuating circumstances. On a snowy night, Drummond was stranded for nearly two hours after calling for help. Thomas Drummond claims he got drunk to stay warm while waiting for rescue, and a jury of his peers believed him!
That’s right, Drummond escaped a DUI conviction by convincing the court that he got drunk after he wrecked on a snowy night, rather than getting into the wreck due to being drunk on a snowy night. According to defense attorney Stephen Wilson, it’s a set of facts you don’t see every day. That’s definitely an understatement, no doubt about it. Still, you can’t blame Drummond; if you’re wrecked and stranded, how else are you going to stay warm?
Whether or not Drummond’s DUI defense is true or not, it’s brilliant. (For the record, that story’s too outlandish not to be true, in my opinion.) He’s also the luckiest man in America because the jury believed him.
