“Falling Towers” Actually Supposed to Look Like That

Posted 4/29/2008 6:00 am by Ron Hogan

fallingtowers.jpg

The Chinese government has launched a building (and demolition) frenzy the likes of which hasn’t been seen since the Works Progress Administration was launched by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1935.  One of the most interesting of the 300 new buildings that are going to be built in Peking’s business district is the so-called Falling Towers, a brand new TV center with office-space for 10,000 people and one of the most fascinating designs I’ve ever seen on a building.

The building, two glass towers connected by an overhanging area on which television will be screened, is just insane.  I can only imagine how dizzying it must be to stare directly overhead at, say, Olympic games sports coverage or your favorite Chinese soap opera.  Despite looking like it might fall over at any time, the $900 million dollar building is actually built to withstand an 8.0 earthquake, despite being made mostly of steel and glass.

In a bonus series of images, Dark Roasted Blend also passes along some shots of future potential Chinese Olympians and the painful-looking stretching exercises that these seriously young (like elementary school aged) gymnasts do.  Just looking at those poses makes my hamstrings twinge in sympathy pain!  Ouch!

    The UK’s Tallest Schoolgirl

Posted 11/05/2009 10:15 am by Ron Hogan

From the outside, Emma Cahill looks like your average school girl.  She just turned 16 and attends St Mary’s Convent School in Worcester, England.  She is active in sports and has many friends, but there’s one thing different about Emma.  At 6′5, she is the tallest teenage girl in the UK.
Fortunately for Emma, her unusual […]

    Bald Bespectacled Bears

Posted 11/04/2009 10:15 am by Ron Hogan

We’ve seen a lot of unusual animals with odd medical problems, like the naked penguin and the world’s ugliest bird.  While both those critters are pathetic in their own way, there’s nothing quite as sad (in a silly way) as the plight of poor Dolores and the other spectacled bears of Leipzig, Germany, who are […]

Cool Costumes At The ING New York Marathon

Posted 11/03/2009 2:34 pm by Ron Hogan

The New York Marathon ran this weekend.  Surprisingly, the winner was an American; in fact, Eritrea-born Meb Keflezighi is the first American citizen to win the marathon since 1982 (the year after I was born).  However, with an estimated 42,000 runners in the marathon this year, not all of them are hardcore professionals.  There are […]

China Causes Snow Storm To Fight Drought

Posted 11/02/2009 9:15 am by Ron Hogan

In its battle with nature, the Chinese government has once again decided to meddle in forces they do not understand.  They spent most of the time leading up to the Olympics seeding clouds to make it rain and lower pollution, and now to fight an unseasonable slate of dry weather, they’ve decided to take to […]

    World’s Largest Reclaimed Wood Treehouse

Posted 10/29/2009 11:56 am by Ron Hogan

It’s the world’s largest treehouse, and it is made of nothing but reclaimed, recycled, and reused materials.  God told Horace Burgess, of Crossville, Tennessee, to build a treehouse and promised that he’d never run out of materials.  Ten stories, 100 feet of height, and $12,500 in nails later, he still hasn’t ended up short of […]

    Halloween-Theme Store Display Windows

Posted 10/28/2009 9:20 am by Ron Hogan

Part of the fun of Halloween for me is decorating.  I love putting out pumpkins and ghosts and all that kind of thing (even though I hate having to take those decorations down come November).  While I never worked in retail during the winter holiday season, I can appreciate a good Halloween window display, and […]

    Shark Vs. Mega Shark

Posted 10/27/2009 11:40 am by Ron Hogan

In a real-life version of Mega Shark Vs. Giant Octopus,  two colossal beasts squared off in the Pacific Ocean near Queensland, Australia.  However, unlike the movie, this wasn’t a Mega Shark versus a Giant Octopus.  This was a Mega Shark versus a slightly smaller shark.  Like the movie, this fight to the finish was caught […]

    Hyper-Realistic Tiny Sculptures

Posted 10/26/2009 2:08 pm by Ron Hogan

Lots of artists have been inspired by real people, but sculptor Adam Beane takes it a step farther.  Despite having only been a sculptor since 2002, he produces some of the best, most photo-realistic toy-sized sculptures I have ever seen.  Take a look; these things are incredible!  Just look at that detail!
    From the lines on […]

Take A Bite Out Of The Chocolate Skull

Posted 10/23/2009 7:00 am by Ron Hogan

It’s a deliciously creepy treat!  Made from your choice of milk chocolate, dark chocolate, white chocolate, or a “human bone” blend of white and milk chocolate, these incredible-looking chocolate skulls are full-sized and made from an actual mold of a human skull.  You can order them from the Chocolate Skulls website.  While they’re pretty expensive […]

The Kitchen Of Tomorrow, Circa 1950

Posted 10/22/2009 3:06 pm by Ron Hogan

I absolutely love those weird old “glimpse into the future” promotional videos that Philco Ford, RCA Whirlpool, Frigidaire, and those sorts of companies used to produce.  You know the ones I’m talking about:  some hair-helmet early 1950’s model highlights things like electric blenders, kitchen computers, and steel appliances and we laugh because not only do […]

    Rudolph The Red-Nosed Pork Chop

Posted 10/22/2009 11:45 am by Ron Hogan

It’s quite possibly the greasiest random food item to ever sport an image of beloved Christmas character Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.  Sue Church, a woman in North Carolina, discovered her pork-chop Rudolph while cooking (or while eating, at least) and rushed over to her local television station to show off her weird, delicious discover.  I […]

Chinese “Cat Girl” Growing Fine Gray Fur

Posted 10/21/2009 11:38 am by Ron Hogan

It started out as a normal birthmark on the back of a 6-year-old girl.  Li Xiaoyuan, like most of us, had a little mole.  Unlike most of us, Li’s mole started growing.  Well, the mole didn’t, but the hair inside the mole did, and now she’s become the “cat girl” of Fengkai, China.  Poor little […]

    World’s Largest Matchstick Model

Posted 10/20/2009 11:21 am by Ron Hogan

It might have taken him 32,000 man hours over 15 years, but David Reynolds has finally accomplished his dream.  Using over 4 million matchsticks, he has built the world’s largest matchstick model.  His inspiration wasn’t a F1 racer, Viking longboat, or Middle Earth, but the Brent Bravo North Sea oil rig.
Just how big is the […]
