It was a scene worthy of the great Mark Twain; indeed, it was a crucial moment in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer! A case of mistaken identity allowed a Brazilian man named Ademir Jorge Goncalves to make an appearance at a very unlikely event: his own funeral. It’s like something out of a Coffin Joe movie, but it’s true.
The 59-year-old man from Santo Antonio de Platina, Brazil, was thought to be dead in the wake of a horriffic car crash. A very badly burned body was placed in a coffin, then morners were told to gather the next day for the burial and memorial service. Imagine their surprise when Ademir walks through the door, having been out at a truck stop all night drinking cachaca (sugar cane liquor) with his rowdy friends. Apparently, the five people who identified the mutilated corpse identified it incorrectly (probably because it was too horribly burned to stare at for long).
