Detroit is one of the saddest cities in America. Simply put, it’s falling apart. The city was massive in the 1950’s and continued to grow until the economic downturn of the 70’s, and it has never recovered. Actually, things are getting worse. Property is basically worthless, entire blocks are abandoned, and most of the city is slowly fading into rubble. Yves Marchand of Romain Meffre Photography has put together a great gallery of images from the dying city of Detroit.
Abandoned buildings are always a bit heart-wrenching for me, but to see it on the scale of Detroit is especially sad and frightening. If you want to see how things would look 20 years after the end of the world, just look above. That abandoned old theater house, the United Artists Theater above, is especially heartbreaking considering just how good those places look once they’re all cleaned up.
