Three young cheetahs on the prowl manage to separate a young impala, a deer-like member of the antelope family, from the rest of the herd. I’ve watched enough nature shows to know what happens next, and I imagine phototographer Michel Denis-Huot knew what was supposed to happen next, too. That little impala is destined to be dinner, because that’s how nature works, right? Wrong. Rather than fight and eat, the big cats decided to romp and play, making the impala into a im-pal-a.
Any animal can be vicious, no matter how innocent or cute it might seem. Even a normally-passive prey critter can give a nasty headbutt, but this impala and these cats just happened onto one another at the right time of day for them all to escape bloodshed. Cheetahs normally hunt in the mornings or early evening, so they have time to rest after their kill. They were either full from a successful dinner, or tired from an unsuccessful one, so the impala got very, very lucky.
