Not a lot of things shock people anymore. It’s harder than ever to get people to think, let alone react, to anything. No matter how shocking it might have been years ago, these days even the most horrific crime gets laughed off or outright ignored. One of the few things that gets people to pay attention? Nazis. That’s why Nina Maria Klevian, a Norwegian-Dutch photographer and artist, took pictures of her infant daughter in a Hitler costume (as well as other dictators). She calls the project “Potency,” because, as she says, “We all have evil within us. Even small children are evil towards each other.”
Kleivan defends her work, saying that while the images are shocking, even darkly funny, “this is not a deliberate provocation. It calls for reflection. Even though comical, you’re not supposed to only laugh at these pictures. You need to contemplate them, ponder where this evil comes from.” Klevian does not intend to make light of the suffering of people at the hands of fascists; she notes that her aunt is Jewish, and she lost many relatives in the Holocaust. Still, the images can be offensive, if only due to the body counts of the dictators her baby dresses like.
