Wisconsin is more than just the land of dairy, it’s also a hotbed of meteor activity. Last night, around 11 PM Eastern Daylight Time, people deluged the National Weather Service in Milwaukee, Wisconsin with frantic telephone calls reporting a giant fireball in the sky. The event wasn’t localized in Beer City, USA, either! All throughout the midwest, from Davenport, Iowa to St. Louis, Missouri, people reported seeing the explosion in the sky. For the moment, researchers believe what was witnessed was a meteor streaking through Earth’s atmosphere.
At least, that’s the official story. Here’s an animation of the explosion constructed by the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Now, I’m a frequent viewer of the Leonid meteor shower, but I’m not familiar with the Gamma Virginids. That’s the meteor shower that is believed to be the source of this particular explosive event. Do they normally just randomly explode like a lighter in a blender or a peroxide bottle in a hot car?
If you ask me, that’s some kind of UFO explosion, and the government is just covering it up. Again. If you find a lot of weird wreckage on the ground, then you’ll know what’s up, Milwaukee.
