There’s just something about an animal on the run from the cops that makes it extra fascinating. Even if the fugitive critter isn’t as adorable as the little baby sea lion pup who had a run-in with the law, it’s still an incredible story and it makes for a great tale. Or tail, in the case of one fugitive from justice. Imagine the surprise of residents of Rock Hill, South Carolina’s East Town neighborhood when their peace and quiet was disrupted by a 6-foot-tall emu rampaging through the streets! Just try not to be amused by this wild gallery of escaped emu snapshots! They even caught it on video!
The hero of the day wasn’t Rock Hill’s overmatched police force, but a house painter named Jerry Gibson. He saw the emu running through the streets and knew he had to help. As he put it, “sure enough there was an ostrich runnin’ right by my nose so I couldn’t just sit by and do nothin’.” Gibson was just one of many citizens of Rock Hill who helped aid in the capture of the rogue emu by senior citizen and veteran emu wrangler Bobby Mangrum, who was the man to bring down the bird with a tackle.
Jerry Gibson’s not forgotten, or forgiven, the emu for the vicious scrapes he earned during the chase. “That emu – they say it is an emu, so I guess it is – and me, we ain’t done,” Jerry threatens ominously. No doubt the bird is shaking in its giant, flightless Australian boots.
