The affluent suburb of Edina, Minnesota, like most places, has a law against leaving your pet poop just piled in a park somewhere. No, they expect you to curb your pet and dispose of his or her waste properly. However, unlike most places, Edina was actually willing to provide you with a free baggie in which to dispose of Fido’s recycled dinner. Unfortunately, the free poop sack program is getting discontinued. Don’t blame the St. Bernards, blame the greedy owners.
“People walk up and take them until they’re gone,” says Edina’s Parks and Recreation Department head John Keprios. He further elaborates on the scope, saying it was “not just one isolated incident. It’s everywhere and often.” The dispensers, at eight parks throughout the city, cost some $12,000 to maintain. City workers would fill the dispensers in the morning, then come back at noon to find them empty.
That’s a pretty crappy thing to do, I think. Then again, if you leave stuff out there for the public to take, it’s usually abused. At least, at public parks. This is why we can’t have nice things!
