When Kim Mordue’s son Lloyd died from an overdose of GHB, she knew exactly how she wanted to memorialize her son. Her husband, David, is a tattoo artist. Her son was cremated. So she had her dead son’s ashes made into tattoo ink and got him turned into a series of elaborate tattoos on her back, including a tree of life, an angel releasing a butterfly, and a poem, all of which are dedicated to her deceased son. It’s the typical memorial tattoo, but gone a step further.
“I’ve put Lloyd back where he started — he’s in my body again,” Mordue said. “As soon as I knew it was possible I wanted to have the ashes tattoos as a tribute to Lloyd.” Ms. Mordue hopes that the tattoos and the subsequent publicity will help to serve as a warning to other children to stay away from drugs, so as not to cause harm to their mothers.
