She’s one of the few classic female superheroes to stand on her own two feet. She’s got a brilliant new writer in the person of J. Michael Straczynski, she’s just celebrating her 600th edition, and she’s nearly 70 years old, yet all we can talk about is her new outfit. You have to feel sorry for Wonder Woman. She’s been one of the best comic book characters ever created, but the focus is always on her outfit and not so much on her.
Sadly, that’s not going to change any time soon. Whenever you tinker with a classic character, like Straczynski is doing with his rebooted Wonder Woman look that drops her star-spangled lingerie, that’s all anyone ever pays attention to. Then again, it is a pretty ridiculous outfit, considering she’s fighting criminals in a bustier and tiara. Not all traditions are good traditions, and Straczynski feels the outfit was holding Wonder Woman back.
“She’s been locked into pretty much the exact same outfit since her debut in 1941,” he said. “If you’re going to make a statement about bringing Wonder Woman into the 21st century, you need to be bold and you need to make it visual. I wanted to toughen her up, and give her a modern sensibility.” He added: “What woman only wears only one outfit for 60-plus years?”
