A new year, a new massive pumpkin. Last year, Christy Harp grew a staggeringly huge 1725-pound pumpkin. Chris Stevens believes that’s cute, but not too impressive. At this year’s Stillwater Harvest Fest, Chris Stevens has shattered the Guinness World Record for world’s largest pumpkin by growing an 1810-pound pumpkin! That’s a whole lot of pies!
If you’d like to grow your own massive pumpkin, or pretty much any other kind of giant gourd, here’s what Stevens used to grow his world-record-quality orange gourd: sunshine, rain, cow manure, fish emulsion, and seaweed. I’m not sure what fish emulsion is, but I’m pretty sure it’s not something I want to look up on an empty stomach, as I’d enjoy eating lunch later today. When it comes to pumpkins, either you can grow a whole lot, or one really big one using the same amount of resources.
I can see why caring for one would be significantly easier, but one hungry squirrel and you’ve just wasted all your fish emulsion.
