If you thought Madison Square Garden was toxic only when the Knicks were stinking up the joint, think again. As it turns out, the building itself is kind of toxic even with no one else around. Work crews doing some cleaning near asbestos-related materials forced the emergency closure of Madison Square Garden yesterday, forcing the postponement of a game between the New York Knicks and Orlando Magic. MSG is currently shuttered, pending a clean bill of health from New York’s Department of Environmental Protection.
Known as the World’s Most Famous Arena, the historic Madison Square Garden was built in 1968, has been the home of many historic moments, and as such is chock full of asbestos and other dangerous hazards. While later tests revealed that no asbestos was exposed during the cleaning process (which took place after Monday’s New York Rangers game, the arena remains closed while testing is conducted.
“As the safety of our customers and employees are our top priority, we will not reopen the Garden until we are absolutely assured the arena is safe,” said a statement from MSG officials. Until then, the Knicks and Rangers may need a replacement home, such as the Izod Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
