A lot of cities embrace their movie fame. Philadelphia, for example, has a statue of Rocky. However, the same cannot be said of Detroit, Michigan. Detroit is best-known as the city of the infamous cyborg crime fighter RoboCop, but don’t look for Detroit to celebrate this fact any time soon. Detroit Mayor Dave Bing has officially rejected a RoboCop statue idea for Detroit.
Wrote Bing on Twitter, “There are not any plans to erect a statue to Robocop. Thank you for the suggestion.”
I’m a little surprised by this idea, but it’s a great one. That said, I am pretty sure Detroit doesn’t want to be associated with the fictional Detroit. I mean, a blighted urban landscape full of ultra-violent criminals, underpaid police, a crooked mayor, and monstrous corporations driven only by profits? No wonder Detroit doesn’t want to be associated with Paul Verhoeven’s classic achievement in science-fiction and social satire; it’s a little too close to home considering Detroit’s former mayor is now doing time in jail for corruption and bribery.
