The website reads: “Flowers wilt. Chocolates met. Roaches are forever.”
No, that’s not a reference to the recent infestation of bedbugs in New York City. Nor to the city’s winter battle with garbage. It’s the Bronx Zoo’s unique take on Valentine’s Day: for a $10 donation, the zoo will allow lovers to name Madagascar hissing cockroaches after each other.
Madagascar hissing cockroaches are the world’s largest variety of cockroach, commonly reaching 2–4″ long. They’re also the noisiest variety. Recipients of the zoo’s Name-a-Roach gift event don’t receive the insects (thank heavens), but they do receive certificates explaining there’s a special bug at the zoo, named just for him or her.
According to one zoo spokesperson, more than 1,000 people have chosen to name cockroaches after their loved ones, and that was just within the first 24 hours of the offer. The Bronx Zoo has some 58,000 of the iridescent brown insects that need names, but cautions that the offer only lasts through Valentine’s Day. So, if you fancy naming one of the little buggers after that special someone, you’d better act soon.
Proceeds will go to help preserve wildlife and forests in Madagascar and other parts of the world, according to the zoo’s website.
