When you’re dealing with the most prestigious horse race in the world, that means you’re going to be dealing with a lot of entries. In this year’s Kentucky Derby, for example, there are a staggering 20 thoroughbred horses scheduled to race. In a race that large, it’s not really a question of how good your horse is, but how good your ride is. Calven Borel put together two straight Derby wins (and three of the last four!) by getting to the inside and beating everybody to the rail for the smoothest ride. The importance of track placement means that there’s nothing quite as important as where you draw in the Derby. Here’s Kentucky Derby 137’s current odds and the post position for each horse.
The current favorite of this year’s race, 4-1 Dialed In, has one of the better starting gate positions at 8; he’s far enough from the inside to avoid getting squeezed, but not so far out that he’s going to have to move in a mile to get anywhere. The same can’t be said for former favorite and scratch risk Mr. Mo (9-2), who gets stuck all the way out in gate 18, next to 6-1 Nehro. We’ve seen horses come from pretty far out in the gate to win, but that makes the ride a whole lot harder.
As for me, I don’t have any advice. I live a few miles from Churchill Downs, yet I know next to nothing about this year’s crop of horses. Due to a lack of preparation, my best advice is to bet on the horse that poops before the race; he’ll be lighter and more relaxed and thus, he’ll run better. Also, bet on the field to show.
