Today is an important day north of the border. No, it’s not the first day of the NHL season or a celebration of poutine, it’s Canada’s birthday! Canada Day is July 1, and it is a celebration of the day Canada became an actual country, rather than a loose collection of provinces bound together by their mutual hate of Quebec. So, in that spirit, Happy Canada Day, everyone! Fire up the Bryan Adams, put the beer on ice, and start chugging Canadian Cocktails (Canadian Club whiskey and maple syrup). To honor my hoser friends, here’s the best rendition of O Canada ever:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=meLpuF9UMvkFor those not in the know when it comes to Canadian history, Canada Day was called Dominion Day until 1982, at which time Canada gained independence from the United Kingdom and changed the name to Canada Day. Dominion Day is much cooler, because it’s a name that dates back to 1867, when the British Empire enacted the British North America Act, which united the three British colonies of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and the Province of Canada into what is now known as Canada.
So have fun, Canada, and really… let’s try to keep the riots to a minimum.
