When the new Cy-Hawk Trophy was presented to Iowa and Iowa State by the Iowa Corn Growers’ Association, the universal response was one of, ahem, confusion. The trophy, which features a family of farmers gathering around a basket full of corn, was widely mocked by pretty much everyone in the known universe, which is kind of a shame because it’s a nice gesture. Much like that sweater your crazy aunt knitted you, Iowa’s two major universities smiled and said thank you, all the while plotting to somehow be rid of the thing. The Corn Growers Association listened. The new Cy-Hawk Trophy will be replaced in 2012 by a new new Cy-Hawk Trophy.
“The overwhelming feedback has been negative,” admitted Corn Growers Association chief Craig Floss. “Because we’ve listened … people want something different than what was proposed last week. And we as Iowa corn growers and the farmers we represent, we want people to be happy. The new Cy-Hawk trophy, we trust, will truly be something fans will embrace.”
The winner of this year’s Cy-Hawk game will be awarded a temporary trophy (or the old, more dated trophy featuring a player and a football). Next year’s Cy-Hawk Trophy will be crowdsourced, so if it sucks again, Iowans have no one to blame but themselves. Meanwhile, no one’s willing to take the blame… or credit… for this year’s trophy.
