Go to Google.com. In the search box, type in the phrase “do a barrel roll.” I’ll wait. If you’re using a modern browser, or the most recent updated version of a browser, your world should have turned upside down. Google has built in a fun Easter egg, “do a barrel roll.” What’s it for? Well, it’s a test. Not of your ability to follow directions, but as a test to show off the power of CSS3 in their latest and greatest browsers.
Here’s Google’s explanation of their hijinks: “Today’s fun query, ‘do a barrel roll,’ was created by a Google software engineer with the primary goal of entertaining users — while showcasing the power of CSS3, a presentation feature of modern browsers. The ‘do a barrel roll’ query, which causes the search page to spin, will remain in place for a while.”
Google has a history of introducing fun tricks, from Google Aardvark to Google’s various and sundry Doodles. They have previously done tricks to test browsers before, namely Google’s mystery balls (an HTML5 test) and Google’s gray scale changing logo (to test live search).
