The fallout from the alleged child rape scandal at Penn State University has spread from State College, Pennsylvania all the way to the Big 10 Conference headquarters.
The conference bigwigs have opted to remove recently-fired PSU head football coach Joe Paterno’s name from the Big 10 football championship trophy. Paterno, a coaching legend, was fired from his head coaching position last week for not being proactive enough after he was informed that former Nittany Lions linebackers coach Jerry Sandusky was involved in predatory sexual assaults on young boys on the Penn State campus.
The 2011 season was to be the first in the Big 10 that had a football postseason championship game. The trophy was initially named the Stagg-Paterno trophy honoring both the winning legacy of Paterno’s nearly half a century career at Penn State and Amos Alonzo Stagg’s winning tradition at the University of Chicago when it was part of the origin of the Big 10 Conference.
With the allegations that have dogged Sandusky, Paterno and Penn State in the past week, the conference leaders opted to eliminate the PSU head coach from the long-term legacy of the Big 10. The trophy will now be known as the Stagg Championship Trophy.
No matter the name on the trophy, hopefully it won’t be thrown under the wheels of a bus like the Copas del rey in Spain.
