The Today Show has a pretty risky strategy to keep the public interested, and that’s filming outside. Every morning at Rockefeller Center, the Today Show turns the cameras on its giant windows and crowd scenes and that’s part of what keeps the show interesting, even as it struggles in the ratings war. You never know what kind of sign or crazy thing Today Show fans are going to do in an attempt to get their 15 minutes of fame or to make their opinions noted. One man took it a little too far during his protest against the IRS. A knife-wielding man got on camera at The Today Show and cut his wrist in a public protest.
The man is Pak Chong Mar, a 76-year-old who emigrated to the United States from China in 1948. He made a million dollars buying stocks but claims that the IRS and various big banking companies conspired to rob him of his money and claims he has proof of that at his apartment in Queens. He had previously cut off three fingers on his left hand during the Hong Kong Dragon Board Festival in Flushing, Queens in 1995. Obviously, there’s a little mental illness at play here.
“I had to do something desperate to fight the corruption, fight the IRS. They are so powerful,” said Pak Chong Mar from a hospital gurney at Bellevue Hospital. “I need people to help me fight for justice,” Pak said. “If I don’t do something drastic, sooner or later these guys are going to kill me anyway. I couldn’t even pay rent this month.”
