Ladies, start your salivating! The lead roles have been cast in the eagerly-awaited movie version of Fifty Shades of Gray. As it turns out, they went in a completely different direction for both roles than what has been hinted at–or just loudly yelled about–by fans. Charlie Hunnam and Dakota Johnson will be taking on the roles of Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele. Cue the fan backlash, but according to writer E.L. James. Hunnam and Johnson nailed the chemistry test, so maybe that will be enough to make the fans forget Ian Somerhalder.
Charlie Hunnam is best known as Jax from the hit FX drama Sons of Anarchy here in the US, as well as the show Queer As Folk in his native UK. As for Dakota Johnson, director Sam Taylor-Johnson and company wanted an unknown actress to play the role of Anastasia Steele, and they found one. Johnson is the daughter of Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith, and has been involved in several different projects. She might be best known for the Fox sitcom Ben and Kate, but she’s had small roles in The Social Network, Beastly, and 21 Jump Street.
