It’s only been a couple of weeks since Focus and Universal announced that Dakota Johnson and Charlie Hunnam were going to take the lead roles in the film version of the 50 Shades trilogy. Then, the fans got involved. The outrage was palpable, and poor Charlie Hunnam took the bulk of the fan annoyance because he wasn’t what everyone, or at least a loud minority, wanted for Christian Grey. Apparently he was too blond or something; I don’t know any 50 Shades fans, so I didn’t bother to find one to ask. Fortunately, EL James and director Sam Taylor-Johnson didn’t have to struggle too hard to find a replacement. Jamie Dornan will be taking on the role of Christian Grey. (Until the fans run him out of the role, that is.)
Dornan is best known as the lead in the British TV series The Fall and as The Huntsman on ABC’s Once Upon A Time. Now he’ll be best-known for smacking around some milquetoast, boring brunette and being super rich in some smut movie. He was first floated as a possible replacement on October 14, and after some screen tests with Dakota Johnson, he must have been impressive enough to land the role of a lifetime.
Good thing they were in a hurry, because filming starts in November. Kelly Marcel’s original script, another source of contention for Charlie Hunnam, has been sweetened by Patrick Marber. Maybe they’ll get this long-awaited movie adaptation off the ground after all!
