Fitting for Halloween, it’s the blood moon.
It’s one of the rarest events in nature. If you didn’t get up early in the morning to witness it, or if you were one of the few folks in the world who weren’t able to see it, then fortunately the internet has coverage for you of the beautiful, massive blood moon. The blood moon is an interesting event, because it’s a lunar eclipse that is shadowed in such a way that the moon looks red, despite being blocked from the sun by the earth’s shadow. The Detroit Free Press has a great gallery of this morning’s blood moon images. Also, if you’re interested in watching the video live, check out Slooh.com’s great coverage.
It’s not up there with the three wolf moon, but it’s still really cool to see, and it’s pretty rare, too. Of course, it’s not as rare as a disappearing moon, but it looks a whole lot more ominous and creepy, particularly coming so close to Halloween. If you missed it, the next lunar eclipse will be April 4; however, there will be a partial solar eclipse on October 23, so you might want to check that out if you’re interested in astronomy.
