When you’re a famous author with a famous universe, it must be hard to get new projects off the ground. If you’re George R.R. Martin, everyone wants more A Song of Ice and Fire work. When you’re J.K. Rowling, everyone wants more Harry Potter stuff. Sure, she’s had some success outside of the Potterverse with her best-selling adult novel, but when most people talk to Jo Rowling, they want more about the wizarding world. And J.K. keeps giving them what they want via Pottermore and, in this case, The Today Show. J.K. Rowling has debuted a psychological biography of Dolores Umbridge, including her inspiration for everyone’s favorite pink villain.
I think, at some point, J.K. is going to return to the Potterverse for more original content, and it will probably be book-length stuff. There are clearly generations of fans who want to hear more about Potter, whether it’s more adventures of young Harry or Harry Potter: The Next Generation. Still, the psychological profile, while nothing stellar or unexpected, does fill in some of the weird back-story, and reveal the Muggle-world inspiration behind the sweetest-talking villain in the world.
