If you’re going to pay a ton of money for college, the least you can do is get a good education for your bills, right? Well, if you’re looking to get the most bang for your bucks, a consultation of the list of the world’s top 200 universities might be in order, just don’t expect to see America in the top spot. According to education service QS, Cambridge University in the UK is the world’s best university, besting Harvard for the top spot.
While it is no longer the top dog in the education rankings, Harvard is still a well-respected institution. After all, this is the first time Harvard has been in a position other than first in the QS World University Rankings since their inception in 2004, which is a pretty good run at the top. Plus, while Harvard slipped, it slipped all the way down to second place, making it merely the best university in America, one in which people will commit crimes to get into.
So what goes into the formula for this determination? Well, QS factors in a number of weighted issues, including reputations among academics (40 percent) and employers (10 percent), student-faculty ratios (20 percent), the number of international staff and students (5 percent each), and citations of faculty members (20 percents). What caused Harvard’s drop in ranking was its corresponding drop in international staff and students thanks to the global recession.
