The Kindle was Amazon’s most popular holiday sales item last year, shattering records at the online retailing giant and making Amazon CEO and Kindle mastermind Jeff Bezos look like a genius. Much like Apple with its iPod, he was creating an entirely new market for books on the go and pocket-sized libraries. Now, there’s competition. Sony has several e-book readers, while Barnes and Noble moved into the digital book world in an attempt to make up for flagging physical book sales. To make things more problematic for Amazon, both those e-book readers can be handled and purchased in stores, while the Kindle is online only. The solution to this problem? Amazon is going to sell the Kindle at Best Buy.
“A strong presence in physical stores will be essential for e-reader vendors this holiday season, because it gives consumers an opportunity to try before they buy,” says IDC analyst Susan Kevorkian, which “helps to make e-readers more competitive against media tablets, which will also be available at retail.” Translation: this means the Kindle is going to sell like crazy at every Best Buy in the country. It also means I might finally break down and buy one myself, after having known several people to purchase and love them.
