Are you looking to save some money, but don’t want to go camping out at your local Best Buy in an attempt to get your hands on the holiday goodies? Well, consider hitting up a police auction. As the budgets tighten, more and more departments are organizing big auctions, and there’s not an auction bigger than Mexico’s narco-bling auction, where $300,000 gold watches and diamond rings went up for sale.
The auction, organized by the Asset Administration and Disposal Service (SAE) and held by auction house Carasa, was organized to help Mexico City’s beleaguered police department move a little product and raise a little money while eliminating a huge stockpile of vehicles (including helicopters and airplanes), toys, electronics, and most impressively, jewelery and gold-plated weapons.
Buying expensive goods is a common way of laundering money for Mexican drug lords. Apparently turning the cash into luxury goods makes it harder to trace back to the narcotics trade, hence the love of major-league bling south of the border. If they have any stolen gold teeth or solid gold Kate Moss statues, I’m totally there!
