Google loves any excuse to make a game, and it seems like a Google Doodle event is a great excuse to also create some sort of Doodle-based game. They’ve done them for entertainment properties like the Google Whodle game, and for existing video games, like Google Pac-Man. However, it’s not often that they do a historical video game on a Doodle-worthy day. Turns out, Google is a fan of history, and Google Doodle designer Nate Swinehart is a fan of fun little online games. Today’s Google Doodle is a Pony Express game. Here’s Swinehart discussing his game:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?&v=doAgWNekqk0It’s the 155th anniversary of the Pony Express, an arduous California-to-Missouri horse ride across deserts, plains, and hostile territory all for the purpose of delivering the mail in something a little faster than wagon time. William H.Russell, Alexander Majors & William B Waddell founded the Express on April 3, and in true fashion, the first letter delivered by Pony Express arrived on April 14, hence the celebratory game in honor of that celebratory day.
In the game, a Pony Express rider controlled by you has to avoid obstacles and pick up letters in search of the elusive 100 percent rating. I’m not sure real Pony Express riders got points, but they deserved them.
