We are what we eat. At least according to Tourist Pictures.
The video graphics company, run by Stefan Nadelman, has put together a 5-and-a-half minute clip that summarizes American warfare from WWII through the present day. And they do it with food.
Germany becomes bratwurst and pretzels, the French are croissants, Israel becomes a bagel with lox and schmear, America becomes basically the entire McDonald’s menu.
But don’t go thinking it’s just some kind of diagram. No, no. There are sound effects and action-packed scenes filled with food-on-food violence. Hamburgers are tanks shooting pickle bombs, brats are nunchucks, burnt sushi pieces are Nagasaki victims (somewhat un-PC, but it is what happened).
The video takes us all the way through American involvement in WWII to Vietnam to the current conflict in Iraq. And the people behind this genius clip over at Tourist Pictures certainly took technological advances into account when making their short film. Once the video reaches Operation Iraqi Freedom, the screen changes to night-vision where everything is green and black.
It’s pure brilliance. The video can be viewed as an anthropological summary of what has taken place over the course of the last 70 years. Or it can be a subtle anti-war reminder that we are all the same people and our differences are perhaps only defined by the food we eat. Whatever way you stuff it down, this video is a sight to see. Remember that. You can only see it. You can’t eat it.
